Hiroshima Summit, May 19-21: Main venue hotel starts displaying countdown to summit, establishes special department for preparation

On February 8, 100 days before the summit meeting of The Seven industrialized nations (G7) to be held in Hiroshima in May, a large screen began displaying the number of days before the summit in the lobby of the Grand Prince Hotel Hiroshima, the main venue of the event. The hotel in the city’s Minami Ward has also set up a special department to prepare for the summit.

The screen measuring 1.5 meters long and 2.7 meters wide displayed “100 days to go to the opening of the summit.” In addition to the number of days before the summit, the screen will show PR videos produced by the government or the Hiroshima Summit prefectural council, a public-private organization, to arouse visitors’ interest in the summit.

Last December, when the hotel was chosen as the main venue for the event, it established an administration office specialized for the G7 summit. One room has been assigned for this purpose, where the four members of the department, including Haruo Hirase, general manager of the hotel, engage in preparation for the event including communication with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mr. Hirase said on the same day that it would be difficult to handle the summit with only about 250 employees of the hotel and that he has been requesting affiliated hotels across the country to send staff to Hiroshima. “I hope (the leaders) will have a meaningful meeting while viewing the calm Seto Inland Sea, which symbolizes an international city of peace, Hiroshima,” he said.
