Miyajima Island in the city of Hatsukaichi is a small island with a circumference of about 30 kilometers and a population of about 1,400. The highest peak is Mt. Misen, 535 meters above sea level. The observatory at the top offers the beauty of many islands of the Seto Inland Sea.
There are three routes that take about two hours to climb from the foot of the mountain to the top, or if you take the ropeway, it takes about 30 minutes on foot from Shishi-iwa Station, the last stop. Near the top of the mountain, there are rows of huge rocks taller than the height of a person, and the Seto Inland Sea stretches out beyond them. If the weather is good, you can see as far as the mountains of Shikoku.
It is said that Kukai, celebrating the 1,250th anniversary of his birth, practiced asceticism on Mt. Misen in 806 and established the Daishoin Temple of the Shingon sect of Buddhism at the foot. Furthermore, Hirobumi Ito, the first Prime Minister of Japan, was fascinated by the scenery from the mountain and invested his private fortune in repairing the mountain trails.
