@56 days until Hiroshima Summit: Security

by Ryosuke Hattori, Staff Writer

The City of Hiroshima is home to Japan’s top manufacturer of large safes for corporations, including those for financial institutions. Kumahira Co., Ltd., which was founded in 1898 as a safe sales and repair business is located in Minami Ward. The company’s founder, Genzo Kumahira, recognized the importance of safes in the midst of the unstable security situation caused by the recession that followed the Sino-Japanese War. The factory that was later created became independent and became the current company. Although the building was destroyed in the atomic bombing, equipment (including machine tools), were mostly without damage.

The head office has a vault with a metal door that, alone, weighs 22 tons. In recent years, the company has also worked on security gates and surveillance camera systems for building entrances. Both were used at the 2016 Ise-Shima Summit held in Mie Prefecture.
