@52 days until Hiroshima Summit: Soccer stadium

by Kentaro Yamamoto, Staff Writer

In December this year, a new landmark will be complete in Hiroshima’s Central Park in Naka Ward—a new soccer stadium, which will be the new home stadium of Sanfrecce Hiroshima, a professional soccer club in the J1 League. The team’s first league championship in 2012 added momentum toward seeking construction of its new stadium. Going through twists and turns including multiple changes of the candidate site selection, the construction began in February, 2022. The work is now steadily ongoing.

In the new home stadium, the distance between the pitch and spectators’ seats is relatively close at about 8 meters, creating the best in game-watching environments. Also, the stadium is expected to play a role in revitalizing the local area as a “Downtown stadium” by establishing a museum to look back on the club’s history, and setting up rooms to be used for multiple purposes such as culture classes or seminars. As Sanfrecce Hiroshima is determined to be the designated manager of the stadium, the whole club organization is making preparations for opening in the next season.
