@43 days until Hiroshima Summit: Drive My Car

by Yui Kihara, Staff Writer

The movie Drive My Car directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, which won the Best International Feature Film award at the 94th Academy Awards in 2022, was mostly filmed in Hiroshima Prefecture. The Grand Prince Hotel Hiroshima, located in Hiroshima’s Minami Ward, and the main venue for the summit meeting of The G7 (The Group of Seven Industrialized nations) as well as other venues liven up scenes.

One of the important scenes was filmed at the city’s Naka Waste Incineration Plant, located in Naka Ward along the Seto Inland Sea. It is on the extension of the axis that connects the A-bomb Dome, the Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims and the Peace Memorial Museum from north to south, and is partially glazed so as not to block the axis. In the movie, the plant appears as an important place for the female driver.
