On April 7, the Itsukushima Shrine in Hatsukaichi City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Miyajima Island, announced it will be closed between May 19 and 2:00 p.m. on May 20 as the island becomes off-limits to tourists during the summit meeting of The Group of Seven industrialized nations (G7 summit). The Hokoku Shrine and the Treasure Hall near the shrine’s main building will also be closed.

The shrine and its gigantic torii gate standing in the sea is a tourist attraction that symbolizes Miyajima Island. They decided to stop accepting visitors of their own accord after the City of Hatsukaichi announced on April 6 the island would be closed to tourists between May 18 and May 20. However, they “have not yet received official notification of the G7 leaders’ visit.”

According to the local government, no one will be allowed to set foot on the island between noon on May 18 and 2 p.m. on May 20, except for those with proper identification cards issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which will be given to the island residents and those who commute to the island for work or school. Tourists who entered the island before noon on May 18 will be asked to leave by the end of the day.
