by Keiko Watanabe, Staff Writer
Fumiyo Kono, 54, a manga artist from Hiroshima’s Nishi Ward, serialized In This Corner of the World in a magazine from 2007 to 2009. The main character, Suzu, who marries and moves from a fishing village in Hiroshima to Kure, which had a military port, loves to draw pictures. Her clumsy but hard-working life in search of a place to belong is depicted with humor.
The lives and minor happiness of people during wartime were carefully depicted, and the sadness of the war that took them away was expressed. The manga has been translated into 12 languages, including English, French, German, and Italian.
Director Sunao Katabuchi, 62, fell in love with the work and made it into an animated film, which was released in 2016. An English-subtitled screening will be held for journalists from various countries visiting to cover the summit meeting of the G7 (The Group of Seven Industrialized nations).
