RERF will relocate to new, 10-story facility to be built on Hiroshima University Kasumi campus

On January 27, it was learned that the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF; located in Hiroshima’s Minami Ward) and Hiroshima University are planning to construct a new 10-story research facility on the university’s Kasumi campus, also in Minami Ward. RERF, jointly managed by the governments of Japan and the United States, is scheduled to move into the new facility and engage in collaborative research with the university. Construction is scheduled to begin sometime in fiscal 2023.

Hiroshima University President Mitsuo Ochi informed the Chugoku Shimbun of the plans in an exclusive interview with the newspaper. To provide a site for the new facility, the Hiroshima Innovation Center for Biomedical Engineering and Advanced Medicine will be dismantled. The center, a joint research facility among industry, academia, and government, is located to the east of the Institute of the History of Medicine on the university’s Kasumi campus. The new building, jointly constructed by RERF and the university, will stand 10 stories and have a total floor space of about 7,700 square meters. The building’s ground floor will also be utilized by Hiroshima University.

Hiroshima University will lease the land to RERF and bear a portion of the construction costs. RERF is planning to apply for a subsidy from the Japanese national government’s fiscal 2023 draft budget.

RERF officially decided on the move to the Kasumi campus and notified Hiroshima University of that decision on January 18. The university held a meeting of its board of directors on January 26, at which time it officially decided to accept RERF’s proposal for the move. Mr. Ochi mentioned in the interview, “With the move, we’ll be able to carry out new collaborative research based on our enhanced cooperation. Because RERF does not have a medical division, the new arrangement will also contribute to the health of A-bomb survivors.”
