Even sometime after the atomic bombing, many people died from radiation damage and other causes. This gave rise to various folk remedies, one of which was that squash can serve as a medicine.
Some A-bomb survivors resorted to moxibustion. The headline of an article carried by the Chugoku Shimbun on September 8, 1945, said, “Try Moxibustion Immediately, Miraculous Effect on Atomic Bomb Disease.” The article said a medical doctor recognized the efficacy of moxibustion.
Shunkichi Kikuchi (1916-1990), a photographer, took photos of the devastation of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. One of his works taken in October 1945 shows the signboard of an acupuncture and moxibustion clinic. The sign says, “Moxibustion for bomb disease.” It illustrates that many people were making desperate efforts at seeking treatment in suffering and confusion.
