@1 day until Hiroshima Summit: The Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims

by Yumie Kubo, Staff Writer

The Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims is the place where visitors to Peace Memorial Park, located in Hiroshima’s Naka Ward, offer their prayers. The late architect Kenzo Tange modeled it after the shape of an ancient type of Japanese clay dwelling to protect those who died in the atomic bombing from rain. The Hiroshima city government installed it on August 6, 1952. Concerning the phrase inscribed on The Cenotaph, “Let all the souls here rest in peace; For we shall not repeat the evil,” there was a controversy about who committed the evil. The city government explains that it is not a specific country, but all people.

The number of Hiroshima atomic bomb victims listed in the register placed in the stone chest beneath The Cenotaph has increased from 57,902 when it was installed, to 333,907 (as of August 6, 2022). The leaders of the Seven industrialized nations will face this cenotaph on May 19.
