On May 22, Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a message (as well as its provisional Japanese translation) written by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum in the city’s Naka ward. Zelensky attended the summit meeting of the Group of Seven (G7) industrialized nations. The Japanese translation reads: “No country in the world should experience such pain and destruction.”

Mr. Zelenskyy visited the museum on May 21, the last day of the Hiroshima summit and stayed in the museum for about forty minutes. At the beginning of his message in the guest book, he wrote, “I was deeply moved by the visit.” Concluding his message with the words “there is no place for nuclear threats in the present world,” Mr. Zelenskyy sent out a strong warning against Russia, which has invaded Ukraine and brandished the threat of use of nuclear weapons.

On May 22, Mr. Zelenskyy’s original message, as well as the guest book singed by a total of 15 world leaders, including Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, the leaders of international organizations and leaders invited to the summit, were also shown to the press at Hiroshima City Hall.
