Hiroshima Summit, May 19-21: Digital content on Hiroshima’s restoration released by Chugoku Shimbun

On April 16, ahead of the Summit of the Group of Seven (G7) industrialized nations to be held in Hiroshima the Chugoku Shimbun released digital content that shows the history of Hiroshima’s recovery from the atomic bombing through photos and recollections.

This content was created based on the “Restoration of the City ‘Back Then,’” a project featuring the Hiroshima Toyo Carp (a professional baseball team), okonomiyaki (a Japanese-style savory pancake), and the construction of Hiroshima as a peace memorial city. By vertically scrolling the screen, visitors can find a story of “the first streetcar,” which details streetcar service that partially resumed three days after the atomic bombing, followed by photos and recollections about the restoration of the city in chronological order. As they are linked to a map of present-day Hiroshima, viewers can compare differences in the landscape before and after reconstruction.

This is the third digital content production by the Chugoku Shimbun timed for the G7 Summit, following “What Happened Underneath the Mushroom Cloud?” and “How Has the Number of Nuclear Weapons in the World Changed?”
