In August, the Japan Confederation of A- and H-bomb Sufferers Organizations, together with an additional organization, will create a website to introduce items displayed at an A-bomb exhibit held during the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference last summer at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York, the venue of the conference. They will soon begin to raise funds for the project through a crowd-funding campaign.
On July 18, the Japan Confederation of A- and H-bomb Sufferers Organizations held a news conference online with a member of the Tokyo-based non-profit organization (NPO) No More Hibakusha Project, a group involved in the collection and preservation of records of A-bomb survivors’ campaigns throughout Japan. They plan to post a total of 48 items on the website, including photo panels capturing the mushroom cloud, city areas turned to burned ruins after the atomic bombings, and a panel introducing the current situation surrounding nuclear weapons and A-bomb survivors’ campaigns to appeal to the world for nuclear abolition. The information on the website will be available in Japanese and English for the time being.
The website is planned to debut August 1. Sueichi Kido, secretary-general of the Japan Confederation of A- and H-bomb Sufferers Organizations and representative director of the No More Hibakusha Project, said, “The surest way of preventing people from again suffering pains caused by an atomic bombing is to eliminate nuclear weapons. We would like to communicate A-bomb survivors’ thoughts to people all over the world through the website.”
The crowd-funding campaign will be carried out until September 17. The two organizations aim to collect donations of 3.5 million yen in total for expenses, which include photo royalties and the production cost of the website.
