Crowd funding to realize world without nuclear weapons: Japan NGO Network for Nuclear Weapons Abolition funding activities to publicize TPNW

by Koji Higuchi, Staff Writer

The Tokyo-based Japan NGO Network for Nuclear Weapons Abolition, which is made up of about 30 citizen groups, has started fundraising through crowdfunding (CF) to use the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) as leverage to develop activities to abolish nuclear weapons. The goal is to raise 10 million yen by late September. Amid growing interest in nuclear disarmament following the Summit of the Group of Seven (G7) industrialized nations held in Hiroshima in May, the funds will be used to encourage the government of the atomic bombed nation to change its policy.

The first step is to increase the number of “friends” of Diet members by calling it the Japan campaign to abolish nuclear weapons. The funds are planned to be used to hold study sessions for legislators on the TPNW and to pay for the creation and distribution of booklets explaining the treaty. Events will also be planned to widely publicize the treaty, including citizens.

The CF, which began on July 24, was called for by five people, including Akari Endo, 24, graduate student at the NGO network who lives in Kawasaki, and Terumi Tanaka, 91, co-chair of the Japan Confederation of A- and H-bomb Sufferers Organizations (Nihon Hidankyo) who lives in Niiza, Saitama Prefecture. Ms. Endo emphasized, “The TPNW, which denies the existence of nuclear weapons, is gaining support around the world. I would like to appeal many legislators about its significance.” Mr. Tanaka said, “I will work hand in hand with young people to abolish nuclear weapons as soon as possible.”
