On August 6, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida visited Kurakake Nozomi-en, a special nursing home for A-bomb survivors in Asakita Ward, to greet A-bomb survivors.

Mr. Kishida firmly stated in front of 34 residents of the nursing home, “The tragedy that occurred 78 years ago must never be repeated.” Referring to the nursing home’s activity, in which the residents share their experiences of the atomic bombing with junior high school students, he said, “I would like to express my respect for your contributions to providing opportunities for junior high school students to learn about peace.” Mr. Kishida, along with Katsunobu Kato, Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare, and Yoshimasa Hayashi, Minister of Foreign Affairs, who accompanied him, handed bouquets to three A-bomb representatives.

Teruko Noto, 93, who received a bouquet from the prime minister, was exposed to the atomic bomb in Matsubara-cho (now part of Minami Ward) two kilometers from the hypocenter. Recalling those days, she said and hoped, “Many of my friends died. I would like the prime minister to work for the realization of a peaceful world.”
