To gain more advocates for TPNW: Japan NGO Network for Nuclear Weapons Abolition hits 10-million-yen target of crowd-funding to be used for study sessions and brochure publication

A crowd-funding campaign launched by the Japan NGO Network for Nuclear Weapons Abolition (NGO Network), a Tokyo-based organization consisting of about 30 civil groups, has reached its target of 10 million yen. The network began this fundraising campaign to gain broader support for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). The funds will be used to hold activities to influence more Diet members to encourage the Japanese government, which is taking a bearish attitude toward participation in TPNW, to change its strategy.

Young staff of the NGO Network’s secretariat formed a partnership with the Japan Confederation of A-and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations (Nihon Hidankyo) in promoting the fundraising. Under the title of “Japan Campaign for eliminating nuclear weapons,” the organization sought online donations for about two months until September 21, resulting in the accumulation of total funds amounting to 10 million 385 thousand yen from 789 donors from Japan and overseas. On the evening of September 21, those involved in the campaign shared their joy with each other during an online debriefing session.

The funds will be used to hold a study session on the TPNW for Diet members, and to create a brochure providing explanation of the treaty. To fully scale the group’s activity, the network has drawn a plan to turn its “Japan Campaign” into an entity, too.

Yuta Takahashi, 23, a member of NGO network from Fukuyama, Hiroshima Prefecture, said, “We want to reward the voices of many people advocating for TPNW with our activities.” Terumi Tanaka, 91, Co-Chairperson of Nihon Hidankyo, said, “We want to provide support to the network by conveying the horrific history caused by a single atomic bomb explosion as long as our lives last.”
