Photographs by Yutaka Imada, Shigeru Miyahara, Tomohiko Masuda, Hiroshi Takahashi and Manabu Hamaoka
August 6 is a day laden with prayer in Hiroshima. An elderly woman folds her hands to pray before a memorial in Peace Memorial Park. What runs through her mind in the swirl of smoke from incense and candlelight? Already, before dawn breaks, people begin to stream past the Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims to pray for the respose of the dead and for peace on earth. At night, thousands of paper lanterns float down the river past the A-bomb Dome, glowing prayers for the souls of the victims and for peace. These photographs depict the day that gathers great numbers of people in Hiroshima, from Japan and the world, to reflect on the past and enkindle hope for the future.
