by Fumiyasu Miyano, Staff Writer

A special exhibition entitled "The Gaze of the World: Hiroshima Through the Eyes of Visitors” has been open at the East Building of Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum since November 1. This exhibition is sponsored by the Chugoku Shimbun and features 20 dignitaries ranging from Prime Minister Nehru of India, who visited Hiroshima in 1957, to participants in the Group of Seven Industrialized Nations Summit (G7 Summit) in May of this year. It displays photographs taken during their visit as well as guest book messages written by them. It will run until December 25, 2023. It is free of charge.

The Hiroshima Summit corner displays guest book messages the G7 and Ukrainian leaders wrote down at the museum during their visit along with a provisional translation of their messages. Photo panels show Prime Minister Nehru addressing a crowd in Peace Memorial Park, Mother Teresa (1984) and former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev (1992) touring the museum.

Costanza De Filippo (24), a graduate student from Italy who visited Peace Park while on vacation, said, "Hiroshima has risen from the devastating damage caused by the worst war crimes. Hiroshima has become a symbol of peace and reconstruction.”

This exhibition was planned in conjunction with Hiroshima City’s Culture of Peace Month (November). The museum will be open one hour longer than usual in November (until 7 p.m.), and until 6 p.m. in December.
