“Connect Hiroshima,” a citizens group consisting of six university students from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, submitted 43, 288 signatures to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on November 31, calling for the Japanese government’s participation as observer to the Second Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which will begin on November 27 in the United States.

Two representatives, Yukiko Ouchi (19), a freshman at Hiroshima City University, and Haru Konoura (19), a freshman at International Christian University, visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. They submitted a list of signatures that had been collected beginning in August, on the streets and online, and a letter of request to Tsubasa Saito, the principal deputy director of the Arms Control and Disarmament Division. According to Ms. Ouchi, Mr. Saito reiterated the government's reluctance to join the treaty. Ms. Ouchi said to the press, “I am very disappointed. I hope the Japanese government will take action as soon as possible while atomic bomb survivors are still alive.”
