Hiroshima Mayor to Visit Pearl Harbor from November 30 to Discuss Future Efforts

by Keiichi Nohira, Staff Writer

On November 10, Hiroshima City announced that Mayor Kazumi Matsui would visit Pearl Harbor in the U.S. state of Hawaii from November 30 following the signing of a Sister Park Agreement between Pearl Harbor National Memorial in Hawaii and Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. Mr. Matsui will meet with U.S. officials to discuss future efforts between the two parks. This will be his first visit to Pearl Harbor since 2012.

According to the city, he will stay in Honolulu City from November 30 to December 2 after attending the Second Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which is to be held in New York. During his stay, he is planning to visit the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, and meet with the Honolulu Mayor for a discussion.

Mayor Matsui met with officials of the Pearl Harbor National Memorial at Hiroshima City Hall on August 6. At that time, he received an invitation to attend the memorial ceremony to be held there on December 7. Due to a conflict in his schedule, he reportedly will not attend the ceremony.

The sister park agreement between Pearl Harbor National Memorial in Hawaii and Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park has caused mixed reaction among A-bomb survivors and citizens. Some have welcomed this agreement as a step toward reconciliation and friendship between Japan and the U.S. Others have criticized this abrupt decision.
