Prior to the Second Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), which will kick off in New York on November 27, students from Hiroshima Municipal Technical High School, located in Minami Ward, entrusted two copper origami cranes on November 7 to Toshiyuki Mimaki, 81, chair of the Hiroshima Prefectural Confederation of A-bomb Sufferers Organizations (Hiroshima Hidankyo), who will travel to the United States. They want him to use the copper origami cranes in the U.S.

The copper cranes are approximately 4 cm high and 7 cm wide. A volunteer group of third-year mechanical engineering students made them, and group leader Shu Kajita, 17, and vice group leader Mei Kitano, 17, handed them over to Mr. Mimaki at the school on behalf of the group. Mr. Kajita said, “We hope the copper cranes will deliver our wish for a world without nuclear weapons and war,” and Ms. Kitano said, “We want to create an atmosphere that will advance the abolition of nuclear weapons.”

Mr. Mimaki expressed his pleasure, saying, “The copper cranes are beautiful and powerful. They are suitable for discussion on banning nuclear weapons.” He hopes to introduce them through his A-bomb testimony in the U.S. and give them to the ambassadors of participating countries who are enthusiastic about efforts to abolish nuclear weapons.
