A presentation ceremony was held at the Hiroshima school building of Hiroshima Institute of Technology located in Naka Ward, Hiroshima City on November 19 to honor Steven Leeper (76), former chairman of Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation, who was selected as recipient of the 35th Kiyoshi Tanimoto Peace Prize for his work toward the abolition of nuclear weapons.

Mr. Leeper received the certificate of commendation from Mamoru Tsuru, chairman of the Hiroshima Peace Center Foundation (Saeki Ward). In his appreciation speech, Mr. Leeper called for the execution of a culture of peace that rejects violence, saying, "We won’t participate in a culture of war that decides things by a contest of strength.”

Mr. Leeper is originally from the U.S. state of Illinois. He moved to Hiroshima City in 1984. During the period 2007 – 2013, he served as the first non-Japanese chairperson of Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation contributing to the expansion of member cities for the present-day Mayors for Peace Organization. He has continued to be involved in his work related to peace education and speaking to the public, and from this point will move his base to America.

The Peace Prize is presented annually to an individual and organization working for world peace, following the spirits of the late Kiyoshi Tanimoto, minister at the Hiroshima Nagarekawa Church (Naka Ward), who worked tirelessly to provide support to A-bomb survivors.
