On January 25, the Tokyo Tama region peace network of Mayors for Peace, composed of all 26 cities in Tokyo, announced a declaration that the region will work together to promote peace culture. They will focus on passing on the war experience to the next generation, including holding a peace summit in the Tama region to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.

The network was formed in April 2023 by member cities in Tokyo of Mayors for Peace (chaired by Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui). According to the Secretariat of Mayors for Peace, this is the first network in Japan to bring together member cities.

On the same day, the network held its second meeting of Mayors for Peace in Tokyo and compiled a declaration. It recognized the fear of nuclear weapons is still present as the end of World War II is approaching the 80th anniversary and set the following three objectives as its directions of activity: to foster a peace consciousness in civil society; to pass on the reality of the devastation of war and the atomic bombings, and to nurture advocates; and to disseminate information both domestically and internationally.

In addition to holding a peace summit, the network will also work on the creation of a booklet that introduces places damaged by air raids. Kunitachi Mayor Kazuo Nagami, who also serves as the network’s chair, said, “We would like to strengthen cooperation with the A-bombed cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki towards the abolition of nuclear weapons and passing on the war experience.”
