Bucha in Ukraine joins Mayors for Peace

On February 1, Mayors for Peace, which pursues nuclear abolition, and for which Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui serves as president, announced that Bucha City in northern Ukraine joined the organization. Mayors for Peace said the city hoped to cooperate with the Hiroshima City government in an effort to recover from the devastation caused by the war as many of its citizens are still being slaughtered in Russia’s invasion.

According to a city official and others, Mr. Matsui proposed that Bucha Mayor Anatoly Fedoruk should join Mayors for Peace, after he, by email, received a letter in the name of Mr. Fedoruk in August, 2023, that sought cooperation with Hiroshima. The city government received Bucha’s membership application in January.

Bucha is the eighth city in Ukraine to join Mayors for Peace. Other than Bucha, 13 overseas cities in Germany, Turkey and other countries, joined the organization on February 1, raising the total number of Mayors for Peace members to 8,363 cities in 166 nations and regions.
