Hiroshima City begins to accept online reservations for the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum

by Keiichi Nohira, Staff Writer

On February 16, the Hiroshima City government began to accept online reservations for specific time slots as well as sell admission tickets online for the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum in the city’s Naka Ward as a measure to reduce congestion. Both online reservations and sales of tickets will be available to visitors on and after March 1. After a one-year trial period, the city government will consider the pros and cons of a full-scale introduction of the online services.

The city government set up a dedicated website for the service that is accessible from the museum’s website. The website is available around the clock in 15 languages, including Japanese, English and Chinese. According to the city government, admission tickets for 8,306 people were reserved and purchased after 5 p.m. on February 16 with no serious problems.

Visitors can make online reservations and purchase admission tickets up to 90 days in advance. Visitors will select a date and a 30-minute time slot for their visit, make an electronic payment, and enter the museum with a QR code they will receive by email. Online reservation visit timeframes are set between 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. (the time slots to be added to the original opening hours of the museum on March 1). The number of visitors within a 30-minute slot is limited to 300.

Visitors who make online reservations and have chosen a specific time slot, are also able to enter the museum from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.—a period not designated as one of the online reservation timeframes. Tickets for admission will continue to be sold at the ticket counters as well. The city’s Peace Promotion Division said, “We hope to solve the congestion by shortening the waiting time for the purchase of an admission ticket and accepting visitors across a wider area of time.
