On March 15, the Hiroshima City government revealed it would consider holding an exhibit for “Visual archive of Hiroshima atomic bombing—Photographs and films in 1945,” which is seeking to list with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)’s “Memory of the World” International Register. The city government plans to consider holding the exhibit along with five media organizations, the other joint applicants for the international register, including the Chugoku Shimbun.

Mitsuru Nishida, the manager in charge of the city’s efforts to preserve A-bomb experiences, explained the city’s plan at the special budgetary meeting of the city assembly: “The city government hopes to accelerate efforts to preserve, spread, and communicate the reality of the atomic bombing as well as developing momentum for the international registration of the visual archive.” He also noted the city government would consider holding an exhibit and establishing Japanese and English websites along with the other joint applicants with the aim of actively disseminating information both domestically and internationally.

The materials of the visual archive are composed of 1,532 A-bombing documentary photographs and two films shot from August 6, 1945 to the end of December 1945 in and around Hiroshima City. The six organizations submitted the application to UNESCO in November 2023, with the recommendation from Japan’s national government. UNESCO is expected to decide whether to register the visual archive with the “Memory of the World” in the spring of 2025.
