by Kaori Ota, Staff Writer

On March 27, the Hiroshima Office of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) held an opening ceremony for its new office in the city’s Naka Ward. With the demolition of the Hiroshima Chamber of Commerce and Industry building in Naka Ward, which had previously housed UNITAR, the organization was relocated to the south side of Peace Memorial Park.

The new office is a 193 square meter room on the 8th floor of the Nissei Heiwa Koen Building facing Peace Boulevard. About 20 employees work at the office. The Hiroshima Prefectural government contracted with the owner and paid 25 million yen, including relocation expenses and a security deposit.

Hiroshima Prefectural Governor Hidehiko Yuzaki and about 40 people associated with the office attended the ceremony. In his address, UNITAR Executive Director Nikhil Seth, 67, praised the location overlooking Peace Memorial Park, saying they could see the whole trajectory of the people of Hiroshima as they tried to build a better world with hope after the conflict.

The Hiroshima office was opened in the Hiroshima Chamber of Commerce and Industry building in 2003 at the invitation of the prefecture. The office employees have worked to develop personell who take on the role of peacebuilding; so far about 60,000 people from around the world have participated in training and events in the atomic-bombed city.
