Free campsite again available for visitors to Hiroshima on August 6

by Uzaemonnaotsuka Tokai, Staff Writer

The City of Hiroshima will offer a free campsite on the grounds of Hiroshima City University from August 4~7 for visitors from Japan and overseas coming to Hiroshima for the anniversary of the atomic bombing on August 6. On that morning, shuttle buses will be running for those who wish to attend the Peace Memorial Ceremony held at Peace Memorial Park.

Approximately 8,000 of the university’s 11,000 square meters will be used. Reservations are required and capacity is set at 150 people per day. Free parking is available and campers can use such campus facilities as restrooms, showers, and a kitchen. Users of the campsite are advised to bring their own tents and sleeping bags, though these can also be rented at the university grounds.

This is the second time the campsite has been organized. Like the first campsite last year, it will be managed by citizen volunteers. A small music concert and other events are planned for the evenings to provide participants with an opportunity to share views about peace and the abolition of nuclear weapons.

Every year accommodation facilities in the city are fully booked around August 6. Last year the campsite was introduced on a trial basis and a total of 90 people took advantage of the opportunity over a period of five days.

Reservations for this year’s campsite must be made by July 31. Contact the Hiroshima City’s Citizens Activities Promotion Division at 082-504-2677.
