On June 4, the citizens’ organization, “Hiroshima-Palestine Vigil Community,” staged a protest in front of Hiroshima City Hall demanding the Hiroshima City government retract its invitation to an Israeli government representative for the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony to be held on August 6.
Ten members of the organization gathered and staged the protest in response to a decision by the Nagasaki City government, which did not send an invitation to Israel for that city’s peace memorial ceremony to be held on August 9. One of the members argued, “Hiroshima City’s invitation would give a stamp of approval to Israel’s slaughter.” Another said, “I doubt whether the city could hold a ceremony sincerely wishing for peace while inviting Israel as if nothing happened.”
On May 29, the Hiroshima City government sent the invitation to the Israeli embassy with a message calling for the earliest possible ceasefire included in the invitation.
