Hiroshima Medical CO-OP publishes fourth collection of atomic bomb experiences

by Kyosuke Mizukawa, Staff Writer

The Hiroshima Medical CO-OP, which operates Hiroshima Kyoritsu Hospital in the suburbs of Hiroshima and other medical entities, has completed another collection of accounts of the atomic bombing from their patients. Burnt by Pika is the fourth installment of this series. The organization plans to send the original Japanese collection, along with the English version, to U.S. President Barack Obama and the heads of the other nuclear weapons states.

“Most of my loved ones died in the atomic bombing.” “Hell itself could not be so awful.” Such are the contents of this collection. After listening to the A-bomb experiences of eight patients, the 24 second-year staff members of the CO-OP, including nurses and occupational therapists, recorded the survivors’ accounts and added their own impressions as well.

On June 30, about 40 people gathered to commemorate the completion of the book. Yoshihiko Yagi, 75, who shared his experience of losing five family members in the bombing, said with satisfaction, “The book is a collection of testimonies filled with the aspiration for peace of the atomic bomb survivors and today’s young people.”

“One survivor told me ‘It took fifty years for me to accept the death of my loved ones.’ I took those words deeply to heart,” said Masako Kadono, 38, a CO-OP nurse involved in the project.

The book consists of 51 pages in A4 size and 2000 copies have been printed. The collection is available for 300 yen per copy.
