On July 2 the City of Hiroshima released the schedule for the General Conference of Mayors for Peace, scheduled for August 7~10 in Nagasaki. Representatives from 99 cities, in 17 nations, are planning to take part. The conference will determine an action plan for gaining broader support for the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Protocol, which is a roadmap aiming toward the total abolition of nuclear weapons by the year 2020.

The theme of the conference is: “Nuclear weapons abolition is in our hands: Let’s seek the adoption of the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Protocol in 2010.” A welcome reception will be held on August 7. On August 8, the executive session and a plenary session are scheduled, where a future course of action will be decided which focuses on cooperation between cities and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs).

On August 9, after the Nagasaki Peace Prayer Ceremony, two section meetings are scheduled for exchanging views. On the last day, August 10, an appeal will be adopted in a plenary session before the conference closes.

As of June 29, 55 Japanese and 44 overseas cities have expressed an intention to attend the conference. Attending as observers will be government delegates of 13 Asian, African, and European non-nuclear nations and the members of nine NGOs.

Mayors for Peace is promoting the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Protocol and has been campaigning to have the protocol adopted at the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference slated for May 2010.

Mayors for Peace holds a general conference every four years, and this will be its 7th. Tadatoshi Akiba, mayor of Hiroshima and president of Mayors for Peace, stated at a press conference on July 2: “The 2010 NPT Review Conference will be a critical moment for determining the fate of the human race. We plan to hold thorough discussions.”
