Problems with sister park agreement between Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Pearl Harbor National Memorial in U.S. compiled into booklet by group of peace studies instructors of Hiroshima Hidankyo

by Keiichi Nobira, Staff Writer

A group of peace studies instructors of the Hiroshima Prefectural Confederation of A-Bomb Sufferers Organizations (Hiroshima Hidankyo, chaired by Kunihiko Sakuma) has produced a booklet summarizing its opinions on the sister park agreement between Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in the city’s Naka Ward and Pearl Harbor National Memorial in Hawaii, the United States. The booklet includes information on how the agreement was brought about and the group’s inspection visit to the memorial. The booklet is intended to “share with as many people as possible the problems that the agreement poses.”

The B5-sizeed booklet printed in color has 47 pages. It covers the movements the city government and the group made during the past year concerning the agreement, which was signed in June last year. The booklet also contains a report on the group’s visit to the memorial in January this year with photographs and explanations of the USS Arizona Memorial and the USS Oklahoma Memorial. It says, “(Pearl Harbor National Memorial) is a war memorial located in a base. It is completely opposite to Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.”

Takahiro Tsuji, 64, a member of the group, said, “The agreement was not explained to the public or the city council in advance, and was carried out according to the wishes of the United States. We hope that this will be an opportunity for people to think about the meaning of the word ‘reconciliation,’ rather than simply using it.” Five hundred copies have been made and sold for 500 yen each. For further information, call Mr. Tsuji at 080-5622-1256.
