From August 6 to 9, the prefectures of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, along with other organizations, will launch a campaign called “Craft Cranes for Our Future,” where people can send out messages of peace incorporated into folded paper cranes on social media. This year, players of Sanfrecce Hiroshima, a professional soccer club in the J1 League, are scheduled to participate for the first time, and local top athletes from track and field, rugby, and other sports are also invited to join.
The campaign aims to spread messages of peace or the abolition of nuclear weapons on social media along with photos and videos of handmade folded paper cranes. It asks participants to post on X (former Twitter), Instagram, and TikTok, using the hashtags “#CranesForOurFuture” or “#未来へのおりづる.”
It has been held every year since fiscal 2021, and artists such as Yoko Ono and other famous people from Japan and abroad have participated so far. In fiscal 2023, the number of views during the period reached 55.5 million.
This fiscal year, local professional sports and corporate teams were also asked to participate. The Peace Promotion Project Team in the prefectural government said, “We want to deliver messages of peace to a wide range of generations by having athletes who are familiar to young people send out messages.”
