Hiroshima City to cooperate with former Semipalatinsk in fields of peace and medicine

by Hiroaki Watanabe, Staff Writer

On September 4, the City of Hiroshima announced it had signed an agreement with the Kazakhstan city of Semey (former Semipalatinsk), where nuclear tests were repeatedly conducted during the former Soviet era, to exchange and collaborate in fields such as peace and medicine. They strive to deepen friendship among their citizens and contribute to lasting world peace.

They will cooperate and collaborate in the field of peace promotion, including through the activities of Mayors for Peace, for which Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui serves as president, and will advance efforts toward the abolition of nuclear weapons and world peace. They will share information and experiences in the medical and academic fields related to radiation exposure and will also focus on promoting youth exchange. The agreement came into effect on August 9, when signed by both mayors.

The City of Semey proposed a sister city partnership in April. The City of Hiroshima will consider the partnership based on the future performance of exchanges and collaboration. In Semey, more than 450 nuclear tests were conducted between 1949 and 1989, and many citizens still suffer from the effects of them.
