Japan Confederation of A- and H-bomb Sufferers Organizations to dispatch 50 A-bomb survivors to NPT Review Conference

by Uzaemonnaotsuka Tokai, Staff Writer

On October 1, the Japan Confederation of A- and H-bomb Sufferers Organizations will launch an effort seeking atomic bomb survivors (hibakusha) for a delegation that the confederation will dispatch to the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference to be held in May 2010 in New York. The delegation aims to call on the cooperation of government representatives from various nations for the elimination of nuclear weapons. The confederation plans to dispatch about 50 hibakusha, the largest number it has sent abroad.

The participants will leave Tokyo on April 30 and stay in New York until May 6. They will speak with government officials, visit schools and venues of A-bomb exhibitions organized by the United Nations Headquarters, and share their A-bomb accounts.

According to the Japan Confederation of A- and H-bomb Sufferers Organizations, the number of hibakusha who participated in the second UN Special Session on Disarmament in 1982, 41, was the largest contingent they have sent abroad to date. This time, the confederation will seek participants until December 25 through regional organizations in each prefecture. Those taking part will contribute a participation fee of roughly 280,000 yen. Some regional organizations plan to subsidize the participants.

The Hiroshima Prefectural Confederation of A-bomb Sufferers Organizations, chaired by Sunao Tsuboi, plans to dispatch seven or eight hibakusha. It will solicit donations from its members and others and employ “a policy that will not impose a burden on the participants.” Please call the Japan Confederation of A- and H-bomb Sufferers Organizations at 03-3438-1897 for further information.
