Delegation for NPT Review Conference meets in Hiroshima

by Toshiko Bajo, Staff Writer

On January 15, the Hiroshima Council against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs, at the Hiroshima City Council of Social Welfare in downtown Hiroshima, held a general meeting to celebrate the formation of a team of its representatives in anticipation of the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference to be held at United Nations Headquarters in New York in May.

About 60 people, including those who are planning to visit the United States in time for the NPT Review Conference and their supporters, attended the meeting. Masanobu Omori, first representative director of the council, addressed the gathering: "We must, by any means, make progress toward the elimination of nuclear weapons this time, so that the same mistake at the previous NPT Review Conference will not be repeated. Let us make a strong appeal with the use of grassroots power."

The Hiroshima Council against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs is scheduled to dispatch the delegation of up to 50 members, and will continue to accept the team members until the end of February. The Japan Council against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs intends to send more than 1,000 members from all over Japan. The organization will appeal for nuclear abolition by joining a demonstration march in New York City, conducting a signature-collection drive, and taking part in an international peace conference.
