by Toshiko Bajo, Staff Writer

Vikas Swarup, consulate general of India, a country which possesses nuclear weapons, met with Hiroshima Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba at City Hall on February 24.

Referring to the fact that the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) permits only the five original nuclear powers to possess nuclear weapons, Mr. Swarup remarked, "No nation should have nuclear weapons."

A day before meeting with the mayor, Mr. Swarup visited Peace Memorial Museum for the first time. Commenting on the visit, he said, "I was deeply moved."

Mayor Akiba asked Mr. Swarup to encourage cities in India to join Mayors for Peace. Responding to the request favorably, Mr. Swarup said, "A message of peace will be spread to the world thanks to the leadership of Hiroshima."
