President of East Timor to speak about peace in Hiroshima on March 19

by Keisuke Yoshihara, Staff Writer

The Chugoku Shimbun will organize a March 19 forum to encourage a dialogue between the citizens of Hiroshima and José Ramos-Horta, the president of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, during his visit to the city. Mr. Ramos-Horta, the 1996 Nobel Peace Prize laureate who greatly contributed to the ethnic independence of East Timor, will share his views regarding the abolition of nuclear weapons and peace building.

The forum, entitled "A Dialogue with President Ramos-Horta: Promoting Nuclear Abolition and Peace Building," will be held at Memorial Hall in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum at 6 p.m. on March 19. After delivering a speech, the president will engage in discussion with Hiroshima citizens, including university students and atomic bomb survivors. Hiroshima Governor Hidehiko Yuzaki and Hiroshima Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba will also take part in the capacity of commentators.

East Timor won independence from Indonesia in 2002. Mr. Ramos-Horta became its second president in 2007. He is one of the signatories of the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Declaration, released by the Chugoku Shimbun last May. The declaration, signed by seventeen Nobel Peace Prize laureates, called for a world free of nuclear weapons.

Prior to his visit to Hiroshima, President Ramos-Horta sent a message to the Chugoku Shimbun, which reads: "I bow to the victims and survivors of the Hiroshima holocaust. The lesson we learnt from the utter destructiveness of the atomic bomb shall become the source of our genuine commitment to freeing the world we all share from all weapons of mass destruction."

Admission is free. Those who wish to attend the forum should send return postcards with name, age, and phone number to the Hiroshima Peace Media Center of the Chugoku Shimbun (7-1 Dobashi-cho, Naka-ku, Hiroshima 730-8677). Please write your name and return address on the card. The deadline is March 15 and the capacity is 250 people. If there are a large number of applicants, a drawing will be held.
