by Kohei Okata, Staff Writer

On March 17, the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations announced plans for its delegation to New York, to be sent in conjunction with the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference. With A-bomb survivors (hibakusha) as core members, 54 people, a record number for an overseas delegation, will take part.

Among the delegation members, 43 are hibakusha. From Hiroshima, eight people including Sunao Tsuboi, serving as leader, will travel to the United States between April 30 and May 7.

Hibakusha and other delegation members will participate in an Atomic Bomb Exhibition held at the Main Gallery of the United Nations Headquarters by the confederation, starting on May 3. They will also share their experiences of the atomic bombings and their desire for peace at over 20 venues including schools in New York. Before the conference, they will join rallies and demonstrations to be held by nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) from various nations. Mr. Tsuboi expressed his determination, saying, "I would like for us to make an impact on the NPT Review Conference by conveying the consequences of the atomic bombings to people from around the world."
