Polish Upper House Chairman visits Peace Memorial Museum

by Yoko Nitta, Staff Writer

On March 18, Bogdan Borusewicz, the chairman of Poland's Upper House, visited Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and viewed the destruction of Hiroshima through the museum's displays.

Chairman Borusewicz and five fellow members of the Upper House made a tour of the museum guided by Koichiro Maeda, director of the museum. During the tour the chairman asked questions about the number of casualties and survivors and other aspects of the bombing. After viewing the bombed artifacts and photo panels, he said, "I had thought I knew about Hiroshima, but I was shocked to see the tragedy at the very site it occurred."

After the tour, he offered flowers at the Atomic Bomb Cenotaph and visited the A-bomb Dome. He also called on Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba at City Hall, and told him, "I support your efforts to abolish nuclear arms."

The Polish legislators arrived in Japan on March 15, invited by the chairman of Japan's House of Councilors. Chairman Borusewicz himself requested to visit the A-bombed city.
