All cities in Nicaragua to be members of Mayors for Peace

by Sakiko Masuda, Staff Writer

Hiroshima Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba announced on March 26 that all cities in Nicaragua, a country in Central America, will become members of Mayors for Peace, for which he serves as president. Nicaragua will be the first country where every city in the nation has joined the organization.

The last three non-member cities, Mozonte, Murra and Santo Tomas del Norte, will join Mayors for Peace on April 1, bringing the total to 153 cities. From Nicaragua, one province and one administrative district are also members.

Mayor Akiba visited Nicaragua this past January and met with President Daniel Ortega to share the initiatives of Mayors for Peace and ask for his cooperation in pursuing the goal of nuclear abolition.

The Secretariat of Mayors for Peace counts its membership on the 1st of every month. Thus far, the number of member cities stands at 3,680 from 135 countries and regions. This number includes states, provinces and other local government bodies.
