High school students from Hiroshima share horror of atomic bombing with American youth

by Junji Akechi, Staff Writer, dispatched from Washington, D.C.

Three high school students of the "No Nuke Network: Students of Hiroshima Against Nuclear Weapons," now visiting the United States, shared the horrific nature of the atomic bombing with students at Friends Meeting School, a private school in the state of Maryland, near Washington, D.C., on March 26.

Yuji Kanemori, 17, Tomoko Takamoto, 17, and Yuki Okada, 16, described the damage caused by the atomic bombing, including the bomb's fierce heat rays, to 44 students between the ages of 7 and 15. They also noted that there are survivors still reluctant to talk about their A-bomb experiences.

On this day, the three high school students concluded their week of activities in the U.S. capital, appealing for the elimination of nuclear weapons in the nation which dropped the atomic bombs. They will head back to Japan on March 27.
