Hiroshima prefectural government and assembly urge five nuclear weapon states to form consensus on nuclear abolition

by Aya Kano, Staff Writer

In the run-up to the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference to be held in New York this May, the government and assembly of Hiroshima Prefecture have joined forces for a campaign to urge the leaders of the five nuclear weapon states to form a consensus at the conference on the abolition of nuclear weapons and to visit Hiroshima.

The letters of request to the leaders were signed by Hiroshima Governor Hidehiko Yuzaki and Assembly Chairman Masao Hayashi. The letter calls on the five countries to engage in earnest effort for nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation as well as show strong leadership to bring about a successful outcome to the review conference. It also urged the leaders to visit the A-bombed city of Hiroshima to build confidence in the possibility of peace.

On March 29, Shuzo Yokoyama, managing director of the public relations and secretarial department, visited the Tokyo embassies of Russia, the United Kingdom, France and China to deliver the letters. He will visit the American embassy on March 30.
