Japan Confederation of A- and H-bomb Sufferers Organizations seeks legislation of three non-nuclear principles

by Kohei Okata, Staff Writer

On April 13, the Japan Confederation of A- and H-bomb Sufferers Organizations held a meeting at the Diet and submitted the signatures of more than 86,000 people seeking legislation of the three non-nuclear principles. The group submitted these signatures to the parliamentarians of four parties, including the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ), and called for their cooperation so that the petition would be adopted at the Diet.

The signatures on the petition, which have been addressed to both the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Speaker of the House of Councilors, seek that the Diet "enshrine the three non-nuclear principles into law so that the principles, a national credo, will not lose substance." A written request presented to each party demands that they, in consideration of the entry of nuclear weapons into Japan, which has been recognized as "a secret pact in a broad sense" in a report by the Foreign Ministry's panel of experts, pursue the denuclearization of Northeast Asia, including the Korean Peninsula, through legislating the three non-nuclear principles.

The 86,802 signatures collected by this date were equally divided into four and presented to the Diet members of the four parties who attended the meeting, including the DPJ, the Social Democratic Party, the New Komeito, and the Japanese Communist Party. The Japan Confederation of A- and H-bomb Sufferers Organizations called on these Diet members to introduce the petition. The parliamentarians responded positively to the request.
