by Hidekazu Yamada, Staff Writer

On June 9, Yuda-en, a Yamaguchi Prefectural social welfare center for A-bomb survivors (hibakusha) located in the city of Yamaguchi, announced that Susumu Iwamoto, 67, a standing director of Yuda-en and former professor at Tokuyama University, has assumed the post of chairman in place of Shigeteru Tamura, who passed away on May 28 at the age of 79. Mr. Iwamoto will serve out his predecessor's remaining term through the end of March 2012. On June 8, an extraordinary board meeting of Yuda-en was held in the city of Yamaguchi and Mr. Iwamoto was elected from among its members

Mr. Iwamoto, who then held a news conference at the Yamaguchi Prefectural Government, explained that his wife's father experienced the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. He expressed his hopes, saying, "I have been engaged in activities to support hibakusha for more than 30 years. I would like to make a strong effort to carry out educational activities in order to hand down the A-bomb experience."

An executive committee comprised of Yuda-en and others plans to hold a "Peace Forum" on June 30 in Yamaguchi, in time for the 65th anniversary of the atomic bombing this year. The forum will invite Hiroshima Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba and contemplate a future without nuclear weapons.
