by Sakiko Masuda, Staff Writer

On June 13, an event in memory of the late Dr. Marcel Junod, a Swiss doctor who brought in 15 tons of medical supplies to Hiroshima in the aftermath of the atomic bombing, was held in the east wing of Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. In advance of the anniversary of Dr. Junod's death on June 16, about 250 people praised his achievements as the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Japan.

Chieko Matsumoto, 82, who was a student nurse at the time of the bombing, expressed her gratitude by saying, "I was greatly encouraged by the medical supplies brought by Dr. Junod." Four Girl Scouts from a troop in Hiroshima presented a "pledge for peace." One of them, Yang Yi, 17, an exchange student from China, commented, "I was moved by Dr. Junod's action, which transcended nationality. I won't forget those hoping for peace, even after I return to China."

About 30 members of the Hiroshima Boys Choir also performed some songs. The memorial event was organized by a planning committee comprised of the Hiroshima Prefectural Medical Association and other entities.
