by Junji Akechi, Staff Writer

On June 14, the City of Hiroshima began the work of adding names to the register for the A-bomb victims. The amended register will be dedicated to the Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park on August 6 this year, the day marking the 65th anniversary of the atomic bombing. As of June 11, the number of A-bomb victims who have passed away or whose deaths were newly confirmed since last summer is 2,716. The city is accepting applications for further registrations until August 5.

In a conference room of Hiroshima City Hall, Kazuko Ikegame, 68, and Nobuko Nakamoto, 67, A-bomb survivors (hibakusha) and former city employees, used brushes and ink and carefully added the name, date of death, and age at the time of death of each A-bomb victim to the register.

Ms. Nakamoto, who was exposed to the residual radiation from the bomb by entering the city to look for her family, expressed her wishes imbued in the work of adding names to the register, saying, "Many people are dying even now. There is a growing momentum [for nuclear abolition] on the 65th anniversary of the atomic bombing. I want people to know that nuclear weapons must not be produced nor used." They will continue the work at their homes and at other locations.

As of last year, the register reached 95 volumes, which include the names of 263,945 people who experienced the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Please contact the Atomic Bomb Survivors Relief Department of the City of Hiroshima at 082-504-2191 for applications for further registrations.
