Umbrellas sporting children’s smiles opened in front of A-bomb Dome

by Rie Nii, Staff Writer

On August 1, 120 umbrellas printed with the beaming faces of children from Japan and abroad were opened together in front of the A-bomb Dome in downtown Hiroshima, with the wish "Let's build a future filled with children's smiles." Prior to the anniversary of the atomic bombing on August 6, the participants in the event appealed for a peaceful world and the realization of nuclear abolition.

The children sporting big grins live in Sichuan province in China, Ache province in Indonesia, and the city of Kobe in Japan, all of which have suffered damage from earthquakes and/or tidal waves. The "Merry Project," a Tokyo-based nonprofit organization, organized the event with the wish that people will hold onto hope even when they are feeling despair due to disasters and other reasons. The organization visited the disaster-stricken areas and took photos on a number of occasions.

Students at universities and vocational schools in the city of Hiroshima who had responded to the organization's call held the umbrellas, one umbrella by each student, and opened them at various sites, including in front of the Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims in Peace Memorial Park and on the bank of the Motoyasu River.
