A-bomb exhibition opens in Brazil

by Michiko Tanaka, Staff Writer

On August 3, the Paulista Medical Association in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil opened an A-bomb exhibition at its building. The Hiroshima Prefectural Medical Association, a sister organization of the Paulista Medical Association, joined the opening ceremony through a teleconferencing link to celebrate the exhibition.

The ceremony began at 8 a.m. (8 p.m. on August 2, in Brazil). The Paulista Medical Association was connected to Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum via the Internet. At the museum, Shizuteru Usui, president of the Hiroshima Prefectural Medical Association, spoke to his counterparts in English. He said that, as a doctor in Hiroshima, he is very pleased about the A-bomb exhibition in Brazil.

Following Dr. Usui, Steven Leeper, chairman of the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation, appealed for concrete action to be swiftly taken to advance the abolition of nuclear weapons. Both men were projected onto a screen in Brazil and the audience of nearly 200 people there offered spirited applause.

The exhibition was organized by the Paulista Medical Association to commemorate the second anniversary of its ties with the Hiroshima Prefectural Medical Association. The exhibition runs until August 31, and posters that convey the terrible damage wrought by the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki are on display. A DVD, in which A-bomb survivors relate their experiences, is also being played at the exhibition.
