IPPNW World Congress to be held in Hiroshima in August 2012

by Yumi Kanazaki, Staff Writer

The International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) will hold its next World Congress in Hiroshima from August 24 to 26 in 2012. This decision was officially made at the meeting of the IPPNW International Council held on August 29, the last day of the World Congress that took place in Basel, Switzerland.

According to the Japanese Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (JPPNW), for which Shizuteru Usui, president of the Hiroshima Prefectural Medical Association, serves as president, holding the congress in Hiroshima in November 2012 was tentatively decided at a meeting of IPPNW's board of directors held on August 26. However, the schedule was changed in response to the view, made at the World Congress the following day, that IPPNW members can more easily attend the congress during the summer. The JPPNW is planning to hold the congress at the International Conference Center Hiroshima in Peace Memorial Park.

IPPNW was established in 1980 during the Cold War era by physicians in the United States and the former Soviet Union and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985 for, among other factors, its contribution to conveying the horrific consequences wrought by nuclear war. This will be the second time the IPPNW World Congress is hosted in Hiroshima. The first such gathering in Hiroshima was held in 1989. The IPPNW has held its World Congress every two years, with several exceptions, since its first meeting in 1981. 2012 will mark the 20th World Congress.
